Capital Power is proposing to build the Halkirk 2 Wind Power Facility (H2 Project). The approximate 150 megawatt (MW) proposed project will be located north of Capital Power's existing Halkirk Wind Facility in east-central Alberta within Paintearth County.
The Battle River borders the proposed H2 Project area on the north and Paintearth Creek borders the Project area on the south. Highways 855 and 861 also border the Project Area on the west and east respectively. The Project area was selected due to its attractive wind resource.
Capital Power is currently evaluating various wind turbine generator (WTG) technologies for the Project, and are units with a traditional wind turbine configuration – three‐blade units similar to the equipment used in other Alberta wind facilities.
Capital Power is pursuing permitting and regulatory applications. Two meteorological towers were installed in early 2016 and environmental assessments and wind farm design are underway.
The H2 in-service date is expected in 2018; however, this is subject to change depending on market conditions, government regulations and approval.
As a component of the Public Involvement Program, Capital Power held Project open houses on Oct. 5 and 6, 2016 at the Halkirk Community Hall. Representatives from Capital Power, Golder Associates and Access Lands were available to answer questions and gather input and feedback about the proposed Project (view the H2 Project open house notice and display boards).
