Kingsbridge more than double the size of Canada's largest existing wind farm
November 21, 2005 - Edmonton & Toronto - EPCOR will expand Ontario's wind power capacity with its Kingsbridge II Wind Power Project, following the company's success in the Government of Ontario's second competition for new sources of renewable power.
EPCOR has entered into an agreement for the sale of power from the 160 megawatt (MW) Kingsbridge II Wind Power Project to the Ontario Power Authority, under the terms of a Power Purchase Agreement. Kingsbridge II is to be constructed near the community of Goderich, Ontario, near the site of the existing 40 MW Kingsbridge I Wind Power Project, which is scheduled to be completed by spring 2006.
Kingsbridge I and II will be more than double the size of the largest wind farm currently operating in Canada, and are equivalent to 33 per cent of existing Canadian wind power capacity. As of August 2005, Canada had a total installed wind power capacity of 590 MW.
"Kingsbridge II confirms EPCOR's commitment to delivering a stable, affordable and environmentally responsible power supply for Canadians," said EPCOR President and CEO Don Lowry. "Kingsbridge strengthens EPCOR's power generation portfolio, which is based on a diverse mix of fuels and investment in new technologies, including conventional and renewable energy sources."
EPCOR's Kingsbridge II Wind Power Project will be situated in the Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh near the shores of Lake Huron. The site for the project was acquired in earlier this year through EPCOR's purchase of Port Albert Wind Farms Ltd. The project will contain between 55 and 70 wind turbines and involves an investment of approximately $300 million. Construction is expected to begin in late 2006 or early 2007, pending further public consultation and environmental and regulatory approvals.
"We've worked closely with the local community and landowners in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh to make sure our projects fit with community interests and values," said Paul McMillan, Senior Vice President, EPCOR Ontario. "During the development of Kingsbridge I, we saw strong local support for the development of the area's outstanding wind resource. We look forward to further involving the community in a project that strengthens the local economy while delivering an environmentally responsible source of electricity."
