EDMONTON, Alberta – With an employee safety record that ranked in the top quartile for utilities across Canada in 2010, Capital Power (TSX: CPX) today received a Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) President’s Award of Excellence for Employee Safety.

“In order to be a great place to work, Capital Power must be a safe place to work, and our goal is zero injuries,” said Capital Power President and CEO Brian Vaasjo.  “Ambitious targets for safety performance, and a belief that incidents are preventable when safety is properly managed, are part of the culture we are building at Capital Power.”

During construction of the Keephills 3 facility, one of the largest and busiest construction sites in Alberta over the past five years, Capital Power achieved one of the best safety records in the industry, with less than one lost time incident per 1.7 million hours worked.

“CEA member utilities have a long-standing commitment to protecting employees, contractors and communities from injuries and fatalities,” said CEA President and CEO Pierre Guimond.  “Capital Power is a leading example, having established a zero-injury culture as a primary corporate goal.”

The CEA President’s Awards are based on hard data measuring injuries and illness statistics. Recipients must be within the top quartile in two categories: 1) All Injury/Illness Frequency rates; and 2) Lost-Time Injury Severity rates.

The three award levels are bronze, silver, and gold. Companies receive gold for meeting the criteria for three or more consecutive years, silver for two consecutive years, and bronze for meeting the criteria for the given year. Capital Power’s first full year of operations as a publicly traded company was 2010, and the company received the bronze award.
