Capital Power named one of Canada’s ’50 Best Corporate Citizens’


EDMONTON, Alberta – For the sixth consecutive year, Corporate Knights has named Capital Power to its list of the Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada. Capital Power ranked 38th overall and first in the Independent Power and Renewables Category.

This recognition demonstrates Capital Power’s ongoing performance across a variety of sustainability indicators, and our commitment to corporate responsibility and transparency in reporting. Since 2011, Capital Power’s owned renewable energy capacity has increased from under 1% in 2010 to 25% in 2016. Through our community investment program, Capital Power invested $1.17 million in 2015 in supporting communities where we operate. Thanks to leaders and employees committed to operational excellence and high maintenance standards to produce power efficiently, reliably and safely, Capital Power’s operations achieved 95% plant availability in 2015, exceeding a 94% target. With a continued focus on being safe and environmentally responsible, in 2015 our people achieved their best safety and environmental-incidents performance to-date.

The methodology for the 2016 Best 50 Corporate Citizens of Canada is based on 12 key performance indicators (KPIs) covering resource, employee and financial management. Among others, they include:

  • Energy productivity
  • Carbon productivity
  • Innovation capacity
  • Safety performance
  • Leadership diversity

The Best 50 has celebrated Canada’s corporate sustainability leaders since 2002, with a methodology that is globally recognized as a best practice for transparency and objectivity. Corporations do not apply to be included on this list, but are instead ranked based on information that has been reported in the public domain.
