April 30, 2009 - EDMONTON - Media and public are invited to watch a nesting Peregrine falcon at EPCOR’s Genesee Generating Station via the internet.
Images of the falcons and their two eggs are updated every 10 seconds at http://www.epcor.ca/falcons during daytime hours.
"We hope that information gathered will contribute to preservation of the species", said George Greenhough, land services manager at the Genesee Generating Station.
The falcon is nesting in a box perched 225 feet (68 metres) above ground on the G3 stack. The unobstructed sightlines from the stack provide high-quality conditions for a falcon nest box. In addition, the large cooling pond, adjacent wetlands and open fields support a diversity of potential prey and foraging habitat for the falcons.
The remote control camera attached to the box provides a unique opportunity to document the behaviour of Peregrine falcons. Genesee staff record daily observations of the falcons and their behaviour.
The camera will follow the peregrines through hatching and their fledgling period.
