Keephills 3 is a 516 MW supercritical coal-fired generating facility jointly owned by TransAlta and Capital Power. The facility is located about 70 KM west of Edmonton and next to TransAlta’s Keephills power plant. Fuel for Keephills 3 is mined from the adjacent Highvale Mine. Capital Power and TransAlta independently dispatch and market their share of the unit’s electrical output.
*516 MW facility jointly owned with TransAlta
- Superior environmental performance achieved through advanced air quality control system and supercritical boiler technology, which operates at higher steam temperatures and pressures to drive a high-efficiency steam turbine
- Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per MW are lower than those from a conventional coal plant because less fuel is used to produce the same amount of power
- Flue-gas desulphurization unit, low nitrous oxide (NOx) staged burners, and mercury emission control system reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrous oxides (NOx), and mercury by 60% to 80%
- High-efficiency particulate collection system, using fabric filters (baghouse), captures 99.9% of particulate emissions
As one of Alberta’s youngest coal facilities, Keephills 3 is an innovative thermal generation asset utilizing advanced technology to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.
