Capital Power is proposing to build the Halkirk 2 Wind Project (the Project). The approximate 148 megawatt (MW) proposed Project will be located north of Capital Power's existing Halkirk Wind Facility in the County of Paintearth, Alberta.
The Battle River borders the proposed Project area on the north and Paintearth Creek borders the Project area on the south. Highways 855 and 861 also border the Project area on the west and east respectively. The Project area was selected due to its attractive wind resource.
Capital Power has applied to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) for approval to construct and operate the Project and substation pursuant to Sections 11 and 14 (respectively) of the Hydro and Electric Energy Act (HEEA: RSA 2000, c. H-16). The applications (provided below) were prepared in accordance with AUC Rule 007: Applications for Power Plants, Substations, Transmission Lines, Industrial System Designations and Hydro Developments (2016).
Pending a successful outcome of the regulatory review, the Project is anticipated to achieve an in-service date in Q1 2019; however, this date is subject to change depending on considerations including market conditions, government regulations, and approval.
On May 16, 2017, Capital Power hosted a second open house for the proposed Project from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Halkirk Community Hall. View the open house display boards (pdf).
