CAREERS: The Next Generation
Early in 2009, Capital Power entered into a three-year agreement to support Careers: The Next Generation. Created in 1997, CAREERS is a unique industry-driven private/public partnership dedicated to the career development of Alberta's youth in the skilled trades.
Through CAREERS, Capital Power, the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), and industry partners representing the oil, gas and energy sectors introduced a Fourth Class Power Engineering pilot program for high school students.
The goal of the program is to prepare a talent pool of young, experienced and educated power engineers and to attract and retain the highly skilled work force necessary to power Alberta for the next generation.
In 2009, Capital Power provided two paid summer internship positions for students living near our Genesee coal-fired power station. The program allows high-school students to leverage what they have learned in the classroom and gain valuable hands-on experience in the power engineering field while completing their high school diploma.
Upon successfully completing the program, students are eligible to write an exam administered by the Alberta Boilers Safety Association to earn their Fourth Class Power Engineering certification.
