Expanding Ontario’s Renewable Power Generation Potential
In late November 2009, Capital Power submitted an application into the Ontario Power Authority’s (OPA) Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program for the Kingsbridge II Wind Power Project. Kingsbridge II is proposed for the Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh (ACW) and would have the potential to generate up to 270 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy for the province of Ontario.
The countryside of ACW represents one of Ontario’s best areas for wind power generation. Capital Power plans to build upon the success of its existing 40MW Kingsbridge I Wind Power Project which is also located in ACW. Since 2006, Kingsbridge I delivered enough emission free electricity to meet the annual needs of 12,500 Ontario homes (annual average). In 2007 and 2008, Kingsbridge I had the highest capacity rating of any wind power generation site in Ontario.
Working with the Community
Looking ahead to Kingsbridge II, Capital Power has continued to develop and maintain strong relationships with our neighbours throughout our Project area. We will be undertaking extensive discussions with these and other stakeholders beginning with the detailed design work for the Project. Our goal is to develop a Project that, to the greatest extent possible, is both environmentally sound and respects the values and interests of the local community.
Renewable energy projects like Kingsbridge II, will help to meet Ontario’s clean energy targets, while creating jobs and stimulating further economic activity in the province.
A Notice of Proposal to Engage in a Project and the Notice of Public Open House under the Renewable Energy Approvals process has been posted. The Notice of Proposal to Engage in a Project and information on the March public open house can be found here.
Natural Heritage, Water and Cultural Heritage Assessment and Public Consultation Process
In September 2009, the Government of Ontario introduced the Renewable Energy Approval (REA) process. Capital Power will undertake a natural heritage, water and cultural heritage assessment and public consultation process within the REA process. For more information on the Ontario REA please visit http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/en/business/green-energy/ .
A draft Project Description Report is now available for download. Please note that this is a draft report and is subject to change, including information on the proposed Project Location Area, based on the results of the natural heritage, water, and cultural heritage studies, manufacturer and turbine selection, and public consultation.
Further information about the Kingsbridge II Wind Power Project and the timing of the consultation process will appear in local newspapers, by direct mail to landowners in the Project Location Area and on this website.
