Clover Bar Energy Centre Project
Capital Power has completed the installation of one General Electric LM 6000 and new LMS 100 natural gas turbine-generator units at the Clover Bar Energy Centre in northeast Edmonton. The gross generating capacity of units will be approximately 243 megawatts (MW).
“These electricity generating units are ideal for meeting Alberta's need for power during peak periods of the day,” said Jim Oosterbaan, Capital Power Senior Vice-President. “They take just ten minutes to go from start-up to full load, which gives us the flexibility we need to respond to sudden changes in supply and demand.”
Alberta’s growing population and economy are driving significant increases in peak power demand. Between 2004 and 2005, peak power consumption rose 3.7 per cent from 9,236 MW to 9,580 MW. A new winter peak record was set on November 28, 2006 when demand reached 9,661 MW.
The Clover Bar Generating Station was originally built in response to the growing demand for electricity during the 1960s and 1970s. Each of its original four units had the capacity to generate 165 MW for a total capacity of 660 MW. In 2005, when the Balancing Pool of Alberta announced its decision to terminate its Power Purchase Arrangement for output from the station, Capital Power announced it would decommission the existing units.
